Summer Schedule 2013
The hiker’s and paddler’s responsibility code: contact leader several days in advance, wear proper clothing always thinking of the cold & wet, proper foot wear, life jacket, food & water, know your own limitations!! These levels are only a general idea re: trip difficulty.
- A. Strenuous - 3000ft+ elevation gain, 5 to 10 miles, 8 to 10 hrs.
- B. Moderate - 1000-2000ft elevation gain, 5 to 8 miles, 5 to 7 hrs.
- C+. Fairly easy - 1000ft+ elevation gain, 4 to 7 miles, 4 to 6 hrs.
- C. Easy - under 100ft elevation gain, 4miles or under, 3 to 4 hrs.
An excursion to the area of Huntington, Que. to visit the War of 1812 Battle of Chateaugay Museum to be followed by a side trip to the Rockburn Pub. Don’t forget your passport! Jim & Sharon Votraw will be our leaders so please call them at 563-1304.
June 1st - 2nd
Museum Weekend. All museums in Clinton County are free. A good time to pick up your Passport for a summer of exploration and prizes.
Our chapter’s annual dinner to be held at the Elk’s Club in Malone. The menu will be the same as last years with prime rib being the favorite. The cost had to be increased to $26 per person which includes tax & tip. Cards containing additional information will be mailed out by May 18th, final count has to be in by June 7th.
Whip-poor-will A twilight outing to see and hear Nighthawks and Whip-poor-wills in the jack pine barren owned by the W.H. Miner Research Institute. We will depart from Guma’s Restaurant on Route 22 in West Chazy at 7:00 p.m. For those who wish to eat dinner at Guma’s, we will meet at there at 5:30 p.m. The entire loop will be about 2 miles, mostly level terrain. We will walk the concrete road between the lower and upper dams. Nighthawks will be most active near dusk and whip-poor-wills will be more vocal after dark. Head lamps and/or flashlights are necessary. Bring the usual outerwear and insect repellent, etc. Call Ken and Barb Adams to register 563-6920.
Visit the Silver Lake Bog, an easy stroll along a boardwalk maintained by the Nature Conservancy to be followed by a short climb to a pretty picnic spot overlooking Silver Lake. Please contact Marty Sosville at 483-4897. Class C
A tour of the Chateaugay NY Battle Sites, War of 1812 to be led by historian Jim Humiston. This will take some planning using cars as shuttles so please call Jim in plenty of time at 497-6685
Enjoy a bit of history at the Everton Falls Preserve near Santa Clare with Ken & Barb Adams. This will be a pleasant hike rated Class C. Thirty plus years ago our chapter helped to clean up the trash around the falls and had the pleasure of working with Paul Jameson. Call Ken & Barb at 563-6920.
From Mountain View paddle the upper reaches of the Salmon River. Jim Humiston is the leader, call him at 497-6685.
Paddle St. Regis Lake putting in at Paul Smiths College. Search for the Large Totem on the Crow Estate for Jane. Karla Rieger is the leaded, call her at 492-2075.
Canoe up the South Inlet, Upper Chateaugay Lake. A beautiful stream with many beaver dams & wildlife. This could be an overnight. Sue Smith is leading, call her at 425-0362 or 1-802-425-2732.
Paddle on Moose Pond in the Bloomingdale Area. Barbara McMartin describes this pond as, “A gem secreted to the north of the McKenzie Range”. We have often skied on the pond but this will be our first summer trip there. Jim & Sharon are the leaders please call them at 425-6636 or 563-1304.

Upper Canada Village
Our Annual Meeting at the MYF Camp on the Chateaugay Narrows.
A climb up Chimney Mountain to explore the Ice Caves near Indian Lake. Although this is a long drive it is well worth it if you are interested in geology and enjoy poking around in caves. Eagle Cave is the deepest cave discovered in the Adirondacks and has ice up to five feet thick. It is a one mile climb with a 900 foot ascent. If one plans on exploring the caves it becomes a Class A hike, otherwise it is a pleasant climb to view an area of fascinating topography, Class C. Marty Sosville is the leader call him at 483-4897.
A nice walk along Black Pond and Long Pond in the St. Regis area (Class C). There is a lean-to where we can have lunch. Karla Gratto will be the leader. Call Karla at 492-2075.
